Post-Op Recovery

Post-op procedures play an important role in the success and your overall recovery from orthopedic surgery. At OSC, we have outlined post-op processes that are detailed and consistent so the patient knows what to expect and is properly prepared for recovery. We find that this benefits both patients and physicians and is an important piece of the comprehensive care you will get at OSC.

Post-surgery information:

  • If you are experiencing nausea, or if you’re not able to get the pain under control, please call our office at (509) 466-6393.
  • Plan to rest the first 24 hours after surgery to minimize bleeding and swelling.
  • Ice and elevate the operated extremity.
  • Follow through with physical therapy no matter what type of surgery you’ve had.
  • If you will be using crutches or a walker after surgery, take a look around your house and remove any item which extends into a walkway that you could trip on. Move bowls for pet food and water to a location where they are not a tripping hazard. Rearrange furniture to give you more room to maneuver with crutches or a walker. Remove all throw rugs. Place items you use regularly within arm’s reach. Place nightlights in areas you may need lighting in the evening hours.

Upper extremity orthopedic surgery:

  • Keep your bandage/splint/cast clean and dry.
  • Elevate your upper extremity above your heart by placing it upon two pillows with your upper body lying flat to minimize swelling and discomfort. Wiggle your fingers throughout the day.
  • Place an ice pack over the surgical area continuously for the first 72 hours, then intermittently for the rest of the week (several times a day).
  • Pain medication has been prescribed for you. If you are having minor discomfort, take Tylenol. Please be aware that most pain medications can cause constipation; be sure to drink plenty of water, juices, etc.
  • If you develop a fever (above 101 degrees), increased pain or acute tenderness in the upper extremity, please contact your doctor.
  • If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call the office at (509) 466-6393.

Lower extremity orthopedic surgery:
