Dr. David F. Scott, Director
Spokane Joint Replacement Center Hip/Knee Fellowship
Fellows will gain proficiency in routine and complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. Fellows are exposed to a variety of implants and surgical approaches and techniques.
This is a high-volume small boutique private practice setting, in a competitive community environment. We are the regional leader in outpatient joint replacement with a heavy emphasis on high-efficiency outpatient surgery, with a majority of our procedures performed in a free-standing specialty ambulatory surgery center. There is no hospital ER call, as our hospital is a private facility without an ER, but the Fellow will be asked to assist with practice coverage.
The Fellow will be exposed to kinematic alignment knee arthroplasty performed with manual instrumentation and medial-pivot implants, and a direct anterior approach is utilized for primary hip arthroplasty. While robotic arm-assisted arthroplasty is not currently felt to be important for our patients, we are involved with advanced technology including augmented reality and weight-bearing full-length CT scanning.
The fellowship also has a strong clinical research department, and 20% of the fellowship time can be dedicated to research. Fellows are expected to conduct and publish at least one clinical and/or basic science research project. Fellows have access to an extensive clinical outcomes database including a prospective hip/knee registry, a custom clinical research data acquisition and analysis software platform, and dedicated full-time research staff.
The Fellow would be invited to attend and participate in industry-sponsored training and learning centers, and to submit to and attend AAHKS and other key arthroplasty meetings. Manuscript review for journal editorial boards will likely be requested.
The Fellowship strives to allow the Fellow graduated autonomy in their practice, facilitated by running two OR’s simultaneously. There is no competition from medical students, residents, or other fellows.
Candidates must have completed a United States residency and be eligible for a Washington and Idaho medical licensure and DEA certification.
The Fellowship will provide an intellectually stimulating and challenging clinical, surgical, and research environment, an in-depth experience in hip/knee replacement, and a sound preparation for building a surgical practice in an academic, employed, or private setting. The Spokane/Coeur d’Alene region is a beautiful area with abundant outdoor activities and a four-season climate.
